5 Leading Causes of Fatigue That You Must Be Aware Of

Fatigue is becoming a more widespread medical condition, especially in these increasingly fast-paced times. 

Unfortunately, this medical complaint does more than just make someone feel constantly tired. It can also keep people from functioning well at work or enjoying their personal lives at home. In the worst cases, it can negatively impact their relationships and overall quality of life.

1. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)

People with CFS often have severe fatigue and sleep problems. Furthermore, they experience a massive energy crash after performing even a simple activity. This consequently keeps them from performing and enjoying their usual tasks. In some cases, the illness can even confine them to bed.

2. Idiopathic Chronic Fatigue (ICF)

Patients with chronic fatigue but do not fulfill the criteria for CFS may be considered to have idiopathic chronic fatigue.

ICF is unexplainable chronic fatigue lasting for at least six consecutive months. This is a unique medical condition with no clearly known cause. With that said, it can still leave a serious effect on people experiencing it. 

3. Fibromyalgia

Fatigue can also be caused by fibromyalgia, a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, stiffness, and fatigue. It can also be accompanied by issues with sleep, memory, and mood.

It is worth mentioning, however, that fibromyalgia is believed to be a disorder of pain regulation. Recent research and studies show that this disorder affects the way the brain and spinal cord process painful and non-painful signals.

4. Anemia

This is a medical condition wherein the body lacks enough healthy red blood cells to supply the body’s tissues with oxygen. As a result, people with anemia often feel tired and weak. They also typically experience loss of energy.

Anemia comes in different forms; some may be long-term, while others may be temporary. Furthermore, some types may bring mild symptoms, but others carry more severe ones.

5. Hypothyroidism

This condition is essentially caused by an underactive thyroid gland.

The thyroid hormones produced by this gland keeps the body running normally. If there are not enough of these hormones, the heart becomes less efficient at pumping blood out to the body. Consequently, this can cause shortness of breath and tiredness.

Other symptoms of hypothyroidism include muscle weakness, muscle aches, sensitivity to cold, and impaired memory among others. 


Fatigue is a condition that must not be simply ignored as it can seriously affect your day-to-day activities and quality of life. Considering this, you must strive to understand the possible reasons behind this tiredness. This is the first step you must take to truly regain your energy and go back to the activities you once enjoyed doing.
